These multidisciplinary objects, coupled with generous donations from other faculty and alumni, comprise the core collection of the museum. Like many museums that are closed to help flatten the COVID-19 curve, GMD has pivoted from in-person exhibitions and object-based learning to a wide range of digital engagement. Thanks to the graduate students and GMD staff, this is a lively environment. Both institutions will decide what exhibitions will travel to Las Vegas in a process expected to unfold organically as the collaboration develops, Govan and Harmon say. Because the museums are relatively close in proximity, Govan hopes the shows can travel in electric vehicles to reduce the carbon footprint of the exchange.

For instance, material choices, construction techniques, and pattern styles can point to cultural or regional origins and affiliations, and even particular shoe styles can indicate something about the wearer’s profession or social status. Just as handmade clothing and accessories can absorb a culture’s traditions and practices, they can also help us imagine the stories and times of the people who once wore them. In 2001 the Goldstein added a full set of Emigre magazines to its collection, which provided a significant anchor for its graphic design collection. This acquisition, guided by Professor Steven McCarthy, was made possible by the Anne Brey Fund.

Please check out current and upcoming exhibitions for the most up-to-date gallery hours. There’s also an outdoor catering kitchen, a fine dining area, as well as an outdoor media room. Club James has it all— from state-of-the-art LCD screens to a concrete DJ booth with a concert-quality sound system. The poured concrete space has a glass wall overlooking Beverly Hills that can retract, giving the space an indoor/outdoor feel.
With the expansion of McNeal Hall in 1976, the Goldstein Gallery (now the Goldstein Museum of Design) was dedicated as a tribute to Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Their leadership helped shape design education across the country and set the direction for the College of Design. Their legacy lives on in the growing collection of design objects and the many exhibitions, past, present, and future. The primary focus of the Goldstein Museum of Design's collection is on costume, with around 21,000 items dating back to 1790.

Like many of the rooms, the bedroom is not directly connected to the rest of the house through the indoors. The home features one-of-a-kind outdoor hallways, decorated by the sky and a myriad of vegetation. The Sheats-Goldstein mansion has some of the best views in Los Angeles from Downtown facing east all the way to Century City and even to the ocean. The current (and second) owner of the home is entrepreneur James F. Goldstein.
Rather than enlarging its physical footprint, LACMA aims to broaden its cultural reach, influence and presence in the West, and globally — a benign Manifest Destiny for the California visual arts scene. While this can be an exciting time, mental health issues in the college demographic have grown exponentially in... Years in the making, it features an 85 foot infinity-edged cantilevered concrete foot lap pool.

The 4,500-square-foot Sheats-Goldstein residence was designed by John Lautner (one of the most noteworthy American architects of the twentieth century) and built between 1961 and 1963, in Los Angeles’ Beverly Crest neighborhood. The Goldstein Museum of Design is pleased to support PK-12 students seeking to study from the collection. Heather Harmon, executive director of Las Vegas Museum of Art, says the museum is tentatively slated to open in 2028 and has established a campaign fundraising goal of $150 million, as well as plans for an endowment.

The teakettle on display at the Goldstein was manufactured by the Italian firm Alessi, but the same design was later mass-produced for Target. When they weren’t teaching, they were often traveling—and collecting objects of practical beauty that they used as teaching aids in their classes, in order to emphasize the importance of aesthetic values in the circumstances of ordinary domestic life. In every state, NEH supports organizations that preserve humanities collections. Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions (PAGs) fund projects that help safeguard photographs, letters, documents, prints, moving images, sound recordings, maps, drawings, artworks, textiles, furniture, and artifacts, making them available for future generations. These collections help researchers, educators, and members of the public better understand the complex stories of the various cities, towns, and tribal groups that make up our nation. Yet a woven dress or embroidered scarf can also serve as a record of the past.
As the only design museum in the Upper Midwest, we seek to elevate design by generating awareness, promoting understanding, and sustaining its value for generations to come—carrying on the legacy of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Dubbed Club James, for obvious reasons, the venue was Goldstein’s idea, to keep Hollywood parties out of his house, but still close by. The result is a house so unique, so carefully crafted and fresh, that Goldstein wants everyone to be able to tour it and be inspired by it. James Goldstein worked with the designer for years to ensure every little detail was in tune with the overall theme of ‘organic’ architecture. At the time, the house had fallen into disrepair and was in dire need of a makeover, so Goldstein reached out to Lautner to help bring the residence back to its former glory. Each space is open and offers stunning views of downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, with glass walls throughout that serve to blend the indoors with the outdoors. The concrete-and-wood house was built into the sandstone ledge of a hill, and it’s a testament to the connection between man and nature.

This is the first-ever architecture donation made to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and it’s surely one that will continue to inspire young architects, interior designers, and art and fashion aficionados for many years to come. The Goldstein Museum of Design is dedicated to building and preserving a collection in support of the College of Design’s teaching and research community and for use in public exhibitions and programs. We extend our sincere thanks to all collection object donors that make the work we do possible. Believing in the importance of object-centered learning, sisters Harriet and Vetta Goldstein brought examples of good design into their classrooms.
